The energy consumed by a vehicle’s four tyres, to keep it moving at a steady and straight pace, is called ‘rolling resistance’. The most important effect of rolling resistance can be seen in a vehicle's fuel consumption. The higher the rolling resistance, the more energy is required to keep the tyres in motion. This results in more fuel consumption for the vehicle which, in turn, translates to a higher expense on fuel for vehicle owners.

Legacy
The MRF story is a truly remarkable one. What started as a rubber balloon factory with a funding of Rs.14, 000 way back in the 40’s is now a multibillion legacy that produces quality tyres used all around India &amp; internationally along with a presence in paints &amp; coats, toys, motorsports and cricket training.



Origin
MRF’s origin traces back to the humble shack in Madras that housed its first makeshift toy balloon manufacturing unit set up by KM Mammen Mappillai in 1946. The Company was conceived in 1976 and promoted by Rohit Singh, Bharat Steel Tubes, Ltd. Raunaq International Pvt. Ltd., Raunaq &amp; Co. Pvt. Ltd., Raunaq Singh and Jacob Thomas. The name Apollo Tyres was registered the same year. Their 1st plant was established in 1977 at Bihar, Bihar, India,followed by a 2nd plant at Limda, Gujarat, India in 1991. They acquired Premier Tyres Limited- PTL in 1995, which became their 3rd plant at Kalamassery, Kerala, IndiaIn 2008, they started a new plant at ChennaiTamil Nadu, India A year later in 2009, they acquired the Netherlands-based tyre maker Vredestein Banden B.V. (VBBV) for an undisclosed sum
Their initial product range was selling tyres for 2-wheelers in the Indian market. However, by 1996, they had expanded operations outside India by acquiring Dunlop's Africa operations.In 2013, they disposed off the Dunlop brand in Africa along with most of the South African operation in a sale to Sumitomo Rubber Industries of Japan. The very same year, they started their Global R&amp;D Centre in Enschede, the Netharlands.
In 2015, Apollo bought Germany’s Reifencom for €45.6 million.They shifted their corporate office for Europe region to Amsterdam from Enschede, the Netherlands. and opened a Global R&amp;D Centre, Asia in Chennai, India a few months later.

It has an R&amp;D division, Hari Shankar Singhania Elastomer And Tyre Research Institute (HASETRI) with headquarters at Mysuru under the directorship of renowned scientist, Dr.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dr._Mukhopadhyay&action=edit&redlink=1" target="_self"> </a>Mukhopadhyay. It has one more branch in Chennai. It is known for its state-of-the-art Finite Element Method, NVH and tyre-testing capabilities. This R&amp;D facility is one of its kind in Asia. HASETRI is India's first and foremost independent Research and Testing Center, which fulfills the Nation's need for developing newer and better technologies for Elastomer and Tyres. It is recognized under SIRO (Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) by the Department of<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Scientific_and_Industrial_Research_(India)" target="_self"> </a>Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Govt. of India. It is also acknowledged by the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and other universities for registration leading to higher studies. Product Development Center which carries out activities involving design and development of new products and technology is also present at Mysuru, Karnataka.The Product Development Center and HASETRI work together creating unique product platforms for OE as well as replacement sizes for Indian and International markets.
